It’s another Comedian’s Comedian Podcast performer (episode
215).
Aristeguieta is a Venezuelan comedian based in Australia,
having moved in 2012. However he’s been performing since 2010 in his native
Venezuela, and continuing soon after his emigration. In that time he’s built
himself into a prominent comedian in Australia, and has even made his own sitcom
Lost In Pronunciation. This is his first Edinburgh show.
It’s a smartly written show touching on a variety of topics,
from his divorce to his love of the English language, but predominantly it’s a
show about being an immigrant to Australia, his views on living in a first
world country and how he’s changed as a result.
He’s a friendly, charming performer, and despite the small
crowd he had a confidence and undeterred energy about him. He has some lovely
observations about how you can tell you’re living in a first world country
versus a third world country (the price of tropical fruit for example, and the
fact that coffee in isn’t just ‘coffee’ – there’s flat whites, cappuccinos….).
Another thread running through is Aristeguieta’s love of
food and a great talent in comparing experiences and feelings with tastes – it really
shows that he was once a food technician of sorts.
There’s poignancy in the show, particularly when Aristeguieta
talks about the fact that his marriage eventually fell apart after they emigration
to Australia, but overall it’s a very upbeat show from a guy with an infectious
enthusiasm. He’s sure to make his mark on UK soil over the years – here’s
hoping he’ll return in future years.
