Show 20: Butterfly (performer – Jilberto Soto)

I’ll admit I don’t have an interesting or noble reason for seeing Jilberto Soto, only that he seemed cute, is a fellow gay and his show time fit in with my schedule. Also he had half price tickets available.

Jilberto Soto is an American comedian with Mexican heritage who’s been in London for the past couple of years. Last year was his Edinburgh debut with Even God Knew I Was Gay, though this year it’s a simpler title of ‘Butterfly’, named after the Mariah Carey album (alas, it reflect my poor gay credentials that I was unaware of this album).

He’s a friendly, instantly likeable, bright chap with a sincere character. He touches on a number of topics, from blue material about sex and various hijinks, to more in depth material about his family and relationships, as well as race, growing up and identity.

Refreshingly he doesn’t focus on his sexuality as a crutch for his stage performance, and indeed he seems to have more nuance and interesting observations than the average comedian to make for an enjoyable and engaging hour. It’ll be nice to see his next show.
