Show 21: Alfie Brown: Lunatic

I’ve seen Alfie Brown a few times now, I can’t remember how I first discovered him now. Regardless he’s always struck me as a talented writer with unique, strong opinions about the world and life. Having recently seen him at a comedy night outside of the festival, I was keen to see a full hour of his.

This year's show revolves around an event Brown experienced at a bus stop. After a short and rather emotional phone call with his ex, and mother of his children, he witnessed a man collapse, coughing blood. Passers-by and fellow bus stop attendees rushing to help while Brown and an obviously-vegan lady stand by in shock.

As events unfold Brown takes through a number of in depth, nuanced and well-written musings. As ever Brown’ eloquent and almost poetic writing is made compelling by his imperious, at times authoritative, always impassioned delivery. You can't help but be drawn in by him in this year's show, and he presents a very careful analysis of human behaviour, morality and parenting, as well as touching on the very British idea of social class.

He mocks conventional thought, and he challenges us with his views. It's as much a feat of concentration for us as it is for him, but follow and you'll be rewarded with a hour of biting mockery which inspires us to act on our beliefs and change ourselves for the better, even if it is all futile.
