Recommended by Stu Goldsmith, Sean Morley was described as
an alternative comedian with an interesting show, and as in generally inclined
to such fodder I thought I'd see what the fuss was about.
Morley starts off sitting in audience as a recorded
introduction plays, joining in with the audience applause and then entering a
protracted open musing of puzzlement and disbelief of why the performer hasn't
turned up. Then it's revealed - ah he is in fact the performer. After revealing
himself he apologises to us, the audience.
The show continue in this vein - a series of actions caused
by Morley to mildly provoke, confuse or disappoint the audience, after which he
apologises. The tables turn when he makes us, the audience, apologise to him
for our awful behaviour and for not getting on board or not showing him
support.
It's in interesting show, certainly different, and perhaps
asking whether we are allowed to get away with anything so long as we apologise
for it? Or maybe it's asking what responsibility the performer has the audience
and vice versa?
The laughter I think comes more from the awkwardness of the
increasingly bizarre and tense situations Morley puts the audience in. A clever
comedian, perhaps, but not the funniest.
